Henley Beach is a coastal suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of Charles Sturt. Henley Beach lies between the suburbs of West Beach and Grange. There are several schools in the suburb of Henley Beach. These include Fulham Gardens Primary School, Fulham North Primary School, Henley High School, St Michael’s College, Henley Beach Primary school and Star of the Sea School. Henley Square is located behind Henley Jetty on the Esplanade. Another green area in the suburb is the Henley Grange Memorial Oval and John Mitchell Oval. Henley Beach is serviced by Grange Road and Henley Beach Road. In May 1877, Arthur Harvey, Henry S. Anthony and William P. Wicksteed, purchased the land and laid out the town of Henley Beach, the name being adapted from Henley-on-Thames, England.

The Henley Beach jetty was built in 1883 and the population at that time was about 134 people. The Henley Beach Tramway was opened in February of 1883. A railway linking Henley to the City (via Grange) was opened in 1894. The Electric tramline opened in 1909. The last tram to Adelaide departed from Henley Beach on 2 February 1957, and the tram was replaced by a bus service. Henley Square was opened in 1979.

LIVING IN HENLEY BEACH

Henley Beach is close to the City, West Lakes, Glenelg and the beach. You can enjoy a coffee with friends and family in one of the many cafe’s looking over the water. Henley Beach is approximately 10-kilometres to the city of Adelaide and about 10-minutes to the airport (without being under the flight path). Some of the finest public and private schools can be found in Henley Beach. These include sporting facilities, the Torrens River Linear Park, shopping, dining, pubs and more. The suburb is known for its long sandy beach and vibrant food scene, 57 percent of residents have education facilities nearby and 100 percent have parks within easy reach of their doorsteps.

THINGS TO DO IN HENLEY BEACH

There’s plenty to see and do in Henley Beach. You can swim, paddle, fish or sun yourself on the beautiful and safe sandy beach. Stroll along the Esplanade, jetty and the coastal path, walk the Linear Path into the city, hire a bike or picnic in a park.

The Henley Square Market is held on the last Sunday of every month. The Henley Square Market is one of the newer markets in Adelaide and has quickly become established as one of Adelaide’s popular boutique street markets. Henley Square Market is a family friendly event, with something to entertain all ages. You’ll find around eighty specialised market stalls offering a range of gifts, jewellery, clothing and kitchen wares. Of course, you will also find activities for the kids too. This includes face painting, children’s rides, great quality coffee and a local DJ mixing the tunes to entertain the crowds.
